This page supplements material from my book 7 Steps to Better Writing. It provides videos that amplify the chapter “Step 5 – Draft.”
How to Draft
In the following video, Chris Fox explains how to draft faster. He writes fiction, but his approach applies equally well to informative writing. His advice:
- Turn off distractions
- Turn off your inner critic
- Write in sprints
In the following video, Peter Carr discusses how to write a technical research paper.
Templates
If you need to routinely write the same type of documents, consider the techniques discussed in this section.
In the following video, Barron Henley, an attorney, discusses using templates to write documents that have a common nature. You need not be a lawyer nor write legal documents to apply this principle to your business.
The following 2 videos discuss the use of templates with Microsoft Word 2010 and 2016, but all versions of Word can use and create templates. Templates can save a lot of time and ensure consistency.
Conclusions
Use your outline and mind map to draft quickly. If you are writing a routine document use a template.
